Moriko's family background.

About Daichi Morikawa.

大地 森川

Daichi: From Japanese 大 (dai) meaning "big, great" and 地 (chi) meaning "earth, land."
Morikawa: From Japanese 森 (mori) meaning "forest" and 川 (kawa) meaning "river, stream."

Daichi Morikawa was a human, owner of a flower shop.He was young when he died, he was perhaps in his 40s. Not much is known about him at all.

About Atsuko Okamoto.

岡本

Astuko: From Japanese 敦 (atsu) meaning "honest" and 子 (ko) meaning "child."
Okamoto: From Japanese 岡 (oka) meaning "hill, ridge" and 本 (moto) meaning "base, root, origin."

400 years before Moriko's birth, Atsuko used to be Upper Moon Six. The 6th strongest demon after the Demon King, Muzan.
She was very loyal, eager to help Muzan in his goals. Perhaps was she blinded by the terror Muzan installed in her heart, but she was head over heels for him. Perhaps, one dare day, a little in love. Her personality was close to that of Douma's, Upper Moon Two in the most recent days, for comparison. Perhaps have they even known each other?
Desiring to help her King, she offered (or was asked to and accepted, no one really knows) to be Muzan's experiment to conquer the sun.
Hence Muzan experimented on Atsuko in order to make her immune to the sun.
After years of experiments, Muzan somehow managed to make her 90% demon. Meaning 10% human. However, it was not satisfactory to Muzan and he kept on experimenting more and more.

TW: Experimentation, torture, confinement, implied mention of needles.
(End of TW will be mentioned.)

However, it was not satisfactory to Muzan and he kept on experimenting more and more until Atsuko couldn't take it anymore. The experiments and goals she was so willing to help for were becoming merciless, restless, and painful.Multiple times a day for about three to four months, she suffered. She would cry, scream, trash around as she was being injected some liquids by Muzan. He had to bound her to the experimentation table. Sometimes reacting badly, sometimes well, sometimes passing out.
He'd often also lock her up in the experimentation room when he had to go away.
Some other upper moons were aware of her condition but never pitied her nor tried to help. Pure evil being evil.

/End of TW./

In consequence, Atsuko took the decision to flee.
Somehow, she succeeded.
Perhaps Muzan had let his guard down and let her slip away?
Perhaps he didn't care enough to keep her in?
Or perhaps was he seeing her as a failure created by his own hands to not be fully demon, yet not immune to the sun?
The most likely would be the two last possibilities. She wandered for centuries. No one really knows what she has done from the time she flee from Muzan to the time she met Daichi 400-ish years later.

Atsuko and Daichi's relationship.

Atsuko and Daichi met, probably ten years or so before Moriko's birth.Atsuko was a very cheerful person, who was living without killing.
She didn't have a glorious past, far from that, but she had changed and maintained that change. She was only living off small doses of blood that her husband would claim at the nearest hospital regularly. Almost like a vampire rather than a demon. He would say that he needed them for nurses that were coming by his house regularly, for 'his health'.
Atsuko was extremely emotional. She was a very sensitive person despite being a demon.
Daichi never had any health issues, in reality. He was in perfect condition. He was the calm type, very focused and gathered. He was kind to the core. He would often give flowers for free to kids passing by, even if his shop didn't allow him to live so peacefully.
They were stable, most of the times. They earned a little bit more over than what they barely needed to live. He has never been afraid of Atsuko being a demon. He was seeing her as a whole, not just a demon. He was seeing her heart and not her nature.
Atsuko would sometimes work in the flower shop with him, but would never go out. She was simply fascinated by flowers just like her boyfriend. That was the proof that humans and demons could find peace. In fact, they met because she was wondering around the town at night and stumbled across his shop as he was cleaning and organising for the next day. She offered to help and never left his side after that.

When Atsuko was pregnant, they both decided on the name that they'd give their baby girl. They decided to mix both their names.Mori, from Daichi Morikawa, meaning forest.
And Ko, from Atsuko meaning child.
And then, the name Moriko was born.

A couple months after Moriko's birth.

Atsuko and Daichi died in a fire incident organised by low-ranks slayers to kill Atsuko. That night, her father managed to save Moriko as well as himself while Atsuko got her head cut off within their house, in the fire. Daichi and Moriko didn't see this happening as they were immediatly transferred to the nearest hospital to be saved. However, Moriko's father, heavily injured due to falling down the stairs to run out of the house while in the smoke, didn't make it past the night.

After that, Moriko has been sent to different orphanages. She never settled in one for more than two or three years. She wasn't so much of a turbulent child but she'd run away at every occasions. Her ability having to stay hidden from everyone has also always been difficult. She had been aware of her difference in this aspect and never said it to anyone. She never questioned her family's fate. She had never known what had happened to her parents, nor who they were. She didn't even know their names. She grew in an environment where family was not a thing. In fact, it was the opposite. She grew around children who didn't have a family. So it almost felt normal to her.She would often run away to play with her ability. That was often the reason why she would move to a different orphanage. The adults would be too tired to run after her all the time.
The kids at all orphanages were rude to her. Mocking her green strands of hair, never wanting to talk to her. The adults were stricter to her than others, and never helped her feel more included with others.
No one came to adopt her ever. But she was never sad about it... or was she?Something she never knew, and will never know, is that some orphanages didn't even bother letting families know she could be adopted. Hence why no one could adopt her if she wasn't even included in the children to be adopted. When she turned eighteen, she looked for a job and slowly started to earn money to live in an apartment and managed to leave the orphanage life for good. She then entered university, at the same time as moving into a proper house, to study botany, feeling like she'd need it for her ability, but it didn't really interest her.A year or so after, she met Akaza and her current journey begun.
